Salween River: Local villagers in Thailand appealed to
the Thai government to end its cooperation with the Burmese military
junta on five hydroelectric dams on the Salween River. In lieu of a
water shortage, the Thai government has studied plans to build new dams
and reservoirs on the Salween River, which would displace thousands of
people along the Thailand-Burma border.

Bangkok: These protestors stand outside the Government
House in Bangkok in a demonstration in Thailand. They joined about 200
other members of the Assembly of the Poor to demand the government to
give up its plans to build more large dams.

Pan-American Highway: Organized by Frente Unido en
Defensa del Ecosistema (FUDECO -- Panama), the over 600-person human
chain along the Pan-American Highway protested the expansion of
construction of hydroelectric dams in the country. The young boys in
this picture hold signs saying "No Hydroelectric Projects ... Free
Rivers, Free Communities."

Changuinola: Holding masses of colorful signs and banners, protestors in the march in Changuinola called for a better recognition of indigenous rights and a stop to the construction of harmful dams in their region. This was part of a series of activities organized by the groups of the Panamanian Network Against Dams.

Changuinola: The Panamanian Ngobe, Bribri and Naso
indigenous communities who have been affected by the construction of
dams held their Second Congress in Valle Risco in Changuinola. After
the conference, groups united to conclude the event with a large
manifestation in the streets.
